Megastar Amitabh Bachchan recently revisited his family’s ancestral connection to Babu Patti in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district during an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, where he apologised to the villagers over the delay in making a library for children operational.
The actor’s memories of the village were triggered when contestant Chandra Prakash Tiwari mentioned his connection to the Pratapgarh region.
Amitabh recalled that Babu Patti was the birthplace of his ancestors and that his father, celebrated Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, hailed from the village.
“Babu Patti… humare purvojon ka janmasthan tha woh Babu Patti. Aur Babuji wahi se aaye the,” he said.
He then spoke about a library that his wife, actor and politician Jaya Bachchan, had wanted to establish for children in the village.
According to Amitabh, Jaya came up with the idea after visiting Babu Patti and noticing that children there lacked a suitable space where they could study. The family subsequently worked towards setting up a library, with the building eventually constructed.
However, Amitabh said the facility has yet to become fully operational because of certain pending issues.
Using the KBC platform to address residents of the village, he apologised for the delay and assured them that the library would be opened.
“Babu Patti se jo log hain toh bhaiya hum maafi mangte hain. Khol denge hum, ghabraiye mat,” he said.
He explained that although the building is ready, it still needs to be equipped with the resources required for children to use it as a proper reading and study facility.
Babu Patti, located in the Raniganj tehsil of Pratapgarh district, is closely associated with the Bachchan family’s ancestral history. Harivansh Rai Bachchan was born there and went on to become one of the most celebrated poets of Hindi literature.
Jaya Bachchan had visited the village in 2006 and inaugurated the Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan Memorial Library, established in memory of Amitabh’s father. The facility has since faced concerns regarding its condition and functioning.
Amitabh’s remarks on KBC have once again brought attention to the family’s long-standing connection with the village and the library initiative intended to benefit its children.
