Germany will provide Ukraine with a new support package worth more than 1.3 billion euros, with air defence, long-range weapons and energy security forming key components of the assistance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said after meeting German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Kyiv.
Zelensky said the package would include weapons needed by Ukraine immediately as well as measures to strengthen its energy sector ahead of winter. He said air defence was a particular focus of his discussions with Merz.
According to the German government, the military component will include cooperation on the production of interceptors designed to counter jet-powered drones. Recent technical advances would allow Ukraine’s air defence capabilities to be strengthened quickly, Merz said.
Germany will also provide long-range weapons, satellite technology and combat drones. Around 350 million euros has separately been earmarked to help repair Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the winter season.
Zelensky said Ukraine and Germany currently have 15 agreements worth more than 8.5 billion euros. The agreements cover security cooperation, Ukrainian procurement from German defence industries and joint projects inside Ukraine.
The Kyiv visit is Merz’s second since becoming German Chancellor.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has received another major financial boost from the European Union. The Ukrainian Finance Ministry said the country received 2.9 billion euros from the EU to support economic stability, priority budget spending, recovery and modernisation, and reforms linked to its path towards EU membership.
Of that amount, 800 million euros came for the first time under the EU’s Ukraine Support Loan, part of a 90-billion-euro financial instrument for 2026-27 aimed at supporting Ukraine’s budgetary and defence needs.
