India’s economy remains on a strong and stable footing despite uncertainty in the global environment, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said on Monday, attributing the resilience to domestic demand, services exports and an enabling policy framework.
Addressing the Indian Foundation for Quality Management Symposium 2026, Chandrasekaran said India had repeatedly outperformed expectations in recent years and continued to be on a strong growth trajectory.
He pointed to sustained demand in sectors such as automobiles, credit, power and cement as indicators of economic strength. He also cited a current account deficit consistently below 1 per cent of GDP, services exports of around 11 per cent of GDP, strong foreign exchange reserves and healthy bank non-performing asset levels.
Chandrasekaran said India’s long-term growth would require a focus on the objectives outlined under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, with inclusive and sustainable development backed by world-class infrastructure, strong institutions and greater creation of intellectual property.
He identified energy security, advanced and precision manufacturing and investment in human capital as critical to maintaining growth over the coming years.
The Tata Sons chairman also called for a broad transformation of India’s manufacturing ecosystem, with greater emphasis on quality, innovation, productivity and competitiveness.
Citing Germany’s industrial model, he said India could draw lessons from its focus on engineering, standards, precision manufacturing and strong supplier and small and medium enterprise networks.
“I think in India, we need such a transformation,” Chandrasekaran said.
He also stressed that sustainability must become an integral part of India’s manufacturing ambitions. Such a transformation, he said, could strengthen leadership across large companies as well as the middle-tier business ecosystem and help develop specialists capable of contributing to global manufacturing standards and practices.
