Coco Gauff continued her impressive run at the US Open with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over fellow American Iva Jovic to reach the quarterfinals, while Elena Rybakina advanced after a commanding win over Naomi Osaka.
The 2023 US Open champion has now reached her 12th Grand Slam quarterfinal and third in New York. Gauff has also won 20 consecutive sets, with her last dropped set coming against Liudmila Samsonova in the second round of the Cincinnati tournament.
Since 2000, only Serena Williams, with 15, and Maria Sharapova, with 13, have reached more Grand Slam quarterfinals than Gauff before turning 23.
The American has also recorded nine consecutive straight-set victories for the first time in her career.
Gauff dominated the opening set against Jovic, breaking serve three times and taking 12 of the final 13 points. Jovic won the opening game but struggled to match Gauff’s intensity as the set progressed.
Gauff secured another break in the fifth game of the second set, but Jovic immediately levelled by breaking back. The former champion then produced another decisive break to move ahead 5-4 before serving out the match to book her place in the last eight.
“Iva is an incredible player and an incredible talent. She plays beyond her years and I’ve been in similar positions as hers. I’m looking forward to many more battles out here and I’m sure we will be playing a lot more matches in the future,” Gauff said.
Gauff will next face 19-year-old Andreeva, the No. 5 seed and newly crowned Roland Garros champion, who is competing in her first major since winning her maiden Grand Slam title.
Gauff has a perfect 5-0 record against Andreeva, with three victories coming on clay and two on hard courts, including a straight-set win at the 2023 US Open.
“I treat every matchup differently. The head-to-head leans my way, but we never play easy matches against each other. They are always super tough,” Gauff said.
In another fourth-round contest, Rybakina secured her place in the quarterfinals with a dominant victory over Osaka.
