The death toll in the Satya Niketan building collapse in Delhi rose to seven on Monday after rescuers recovered another body from the basement of the collapsed structure, officials said.
The search and rescue operation continued through the night, with several people, mostly students, still feared trapped under the debris. Rescue teams are working to locate and safely evacuate those who may remain trapped.
Four injured people are undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre, while another person with minor injuries was discharged after observation.
The five-storey building, known as ‘Hostel Daze’, was being operated as a boys’ paying guest accommodation and housed several students, many of whom were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus. Police said the premises had rooms to accommodate around 40 people.
An adjacent building also collapsed, according to eyewitnesses, raising concerns over the structural safety of buildings in the area.
Police have registered an FIR at South Campus police station against building owner Hariram Bansal and others, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel confirmed. Delhi Police have formed 10 teams to trace and apprehend Bansal following the issuance of a look-out notice against him.
The building, estimated to be 40-50 years old, had a basement and five upper floors. The collapse occurred around 1.30 p.m. while repair work was reportedly underway in the basement. Officials have also indicated that heavy rainfall may have contributed to the incident.
The rescue operation involves the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Disaster Management Authority.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta revisited the site on Monday morning to assess the ongoing rescue efforts. She said an FIR had been registered against the owner and warned that strict action would be taken against Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials if any negligence or lapses were established.
