The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced bye-elections to five Assembly constituencies across four states and one Lok Sabha seat in Assam. Polling will be held on October 6, with counting and results scheduled for October 9.
The Nagaon Parliamentary constituency in Assam fell vacant following the resignation of Pradyut Bordoloi, according to an ECI statement.
In West Bengal, bye-elections will be held in Nandigram following the resignation of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, and in Rejinagar after the resignation of Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir.
Tamil Nadu will see bye-elections in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies, while polling will also take place in Puducherry’s Thattanchavady constituency.
As per the schedule, the gazette notification will be issued on September 9. The last date for filing nominations is September 16, followed by scrutiny on September 17. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 19.
The ECI said Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems will be used at all polling stations. Adequate numbers of both machines have been made available and arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of polling.
The Commission said electoral roll updation in the four states will continue until the last date for filing nominations, subject to the applicable qualifying date and applications received up to 10 days before the nomination deadline.
The Model Code of Conduct will come into force with immediate effect in the districts where the constituencies going to polls are wholly or partly located.
The ECI also reiterated that candidates with criminal antecedents must publish information about their criminal background in newspapers and through television channels on three occasions during the campaign.
Political parties fielding candidates with criminal antecedents are similarly required to publish details of their candidates’ criminal backgrounds on their websites and through newspapers and television channels on three occasions.
