Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf on Monday warned the United States that any attack on Iranian assets would invite retaliation, responding to remarks by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Ghalibaf said Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure was extensive and accessible, while warning that US oil and gas companies operating in the region were similarly exposed.
“Strike our assets, and you get struck. We’ve already proven it. Ask the bases that are no longer viable,” Ghalibaf said in a post on X.
His remarks came after Hegseth warned on Saturday that the US would destroy and sink Iranian oil tankers if Iran attacked American ships.
Hegseth said Iranian oil tankers were vulnerable to US military action and warned that US aircraft, ships and submarines could strike them in areas under the responsibility of US Central Command and US Pacific Command.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had struck three Iranian crude oil carriers on September 5, following what it described as ballistic missile attacks by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against two US Navy warships operating in regional waters.
According to CENTCOM, an American aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer evaded multiple attacks, with no US personnel injured.
CENTCOM said US forces permanently disabled the IRGC-linked crude oil carriers M/T Downy off Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask.
It also said the unladen crude oil carrier M/T Kylo, also known as the “Noxen”, was completely destroyed in the Gulf of Oman after the crew was ordered to abandon the vessel. US forces reportedly struck the ship at multiple critical locations to render it inoperable.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the strikes were intended to impose an increased economic cost on Iran while defending US forces.
The escalating statements come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides issuing warnings over military action and the security of maritime traffic in the region.
