Social media star Abhishek Malhan’s journey to becoming a gang leader on ‘MTV Roadies’ has brought his career full circle, as he recalled once believing he would “do anything in life but never Roadies.”
Abhishek, popularly known as “Fukra Insaan”, told IANS that he had never watched an entire season of the reality show. However, he remembered the early days when Raghu Ram and Rajiv Lakshman were associated with the auditions.
“Honestly, I haven’t seen Roadies and like, a complete season I’ve never watched, but back then when Raghu and Rajeev used to host those auditions, I actually realized that I’ll do anything in life but never Roadies,” he said.
Reflecting on how his journey has changed, Abhishek added, “See, that’s how life goes, and a circle completes, and today I’m the gang leader, and I used to think back then, who’s gonna go there.”
In the upcoming season, Abhishek will serve as one of six Gang Leaders on the show. The lineup also includes Nikhil Chinapa, Neha Dhupia, Prince Narula, Bani J and Baseer Ali.
Abhishek rose to prominence through his YouTube content before expanding into television and reality shows. He has appeared on ‘Bigg Boss OTT’, ‘Playground Season 3’ and ‘Temptation Island India’.
Over the years, ‘Roadies’ has undergone several changes in its format. The first two seasons featured a daily budget cap for contestants, encouraging them to explore India while completing a series of tasks. After MTV took over from the third season, the show adopted a more competitive and aggressive format.
The fourth season introduced new segments, including Battleground and Graveyard, to select wild-card contestants. The fifth season brought in advantage tasks, allowing winners to secure benefits during vote-outs, and also marked the first international journey for the show.
The tenth season introduced a mentor-based format, with a team of former contestants led by Raghu Ram competing against a team of new contestants mentored by Rannvijay Singha.
The format underwent another major change in the twelfth season with the introduction of Gang Leaders.
The eighteenth season introduced the “buddy pairs” format, pairing former Roadies with new contestants. It also brought back bikes, a feature associated with the show’s earlier seasons, and marked the first season without Rannvijay Singha.
Each season of ‘Roadies’ features a distinct theme along with twists, vote-outs and eliminations. The contestant who survives the challenges and eliminations is ultimately crowned the Ultimate Roadie in the finale.
