The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has recovered Rs 7 lakh in cash from the residence of a barber working at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) during searches linked to a disproportionate assets case against the hospital’s Additional Medical Superintendent, Dr Nori Lakshmi Bhaskar.
ACB officials were conducting searches at premises linked to five NIMS employees, including barber Dhanraj, as part of the ongoing investigation. The agency suspects that some employees of the state-run hospital were acting as alleged benamis for Lakshmi Bhaskar.
The recovery of Rs 7 lakh from Dhanraj’s residence came during the searches, while investigators were also examining land documents and financial transactions allegedly linked to the suspected benamis.
The ACB had arrested Lakshmi Bhaskar last week after conducting searches at his residence and other premises linked to his relatives and associates on September 22.
According to the agency, assets worth about Rs 6.13 crore were identified during the searches, while their estimated market value was around Rs 100 crore.
The ACB registered a case against Bhaskar, 56, alleging that he acquired assets disproportionate to his known sources of income through corrupt practices and other dubious means during his service.
The simultaneous searches covered his residence and seven other locations associated with relatives, friends, suspected benamis and associates. Investigators reportedly found multiple flats, plots, luxury vehicles and 517.8 grams of gold.
The properties identified included a four-bedroom flat in a gated community, two three-bedroom flats in a high-rise gated community in Kukatpally, five two-bedroom flats in Manikonda, Petbasheerabad and Kukatpally, four open plots in Yadradi, Nandigama and Shamirpet, and an 800-square-yard open plot in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
The searches also revealed bank balances of Rs 41 lakh, Rs 12 lakh in Post Office deposits, Rs 35 lakh invested in private financial institutions and Rs 29.55 lakh in mutual funds. Gold ornaments weighing about 517.8 grams, multiple vehicles and electronic gadgets valued at Rs 5 lakh were also listed among the assets.
The investigation into the alleged benami transactions and the source of the recovered cash is continuing.
