India’s Parveen Hooda stormed into the women’s 65kg boxing final at the Asian Games with a commanding 5-0 semifinal victory over China’s Li Shu at the Nishio Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Parveen produced a measured performance in the opening round, relying on well-timed counter punches to edge Li Shu 3-2. The Indian boxer then raised the intensity and dominated the second round, earning a unanimous 5-0 verdict.
She maintained control in the third round, landing accurate punches and keeping her Chinese opponent under pressure. All five judges scored the bout in Parveen’s favour, with three judges giving her a 29-28 score and two awarding her a 30-27 verdict.
Parveen will now fight Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-chin for the gold medal in the 65kg final.
Chen brings significant international experience into the title clash and is a reigning Olympic and world bronze medallist. She also won a bronze medal at the 2023 Asian Games.
India have already secured six boxing medals at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Games, with the country’s boxers continuing their strong run in the competition.
On Monday, Kapil Pokhariya, Priya Ghanghas and Lovlina Borgohain all won their bouts. Priya secured a medal in the women’s 60kg category after defeating Tajikistan’s Mijgona Samadova 5-0 in the quarterfinals, while Lovlina booked a medal in the women’s 75kg category with a 5-0 quarterfinal win over South Korea’s Seong Suyeon.
India had secured three more boxing medals on Sunday through Ankush Panghal, Parveen and Narender.
Ankush, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, defeated Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in the men’s 80kg quarterfinals to secure India’s first boxing medal at the Games.
Parveen had earlier booked her place in the medal round with a 5-0 quarterfinal victory over Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova in the women’s 65kg category.
Narender also secured a medal after defeating Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep in the men’s +90kg quarterfinals.
Ankush and Narender are also scheduled to compete in their respective semifinals on Tuesday as India seek further progress in the boxing competition.
