The death toll in the collapse of a two-storey house in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district rose to five on Tuesday after one of the injured victims succumbed to his injuries, officials said.
The house, located in the Malwan police station area, collapsed following a powerful explosion at the residence of a fruit trader on Monday evening. Four people were killed initially and three others were injured.
One of the injured, who had suffered burns over more than 90 per cent of his body and was on ventilator support, later died during treatment.
The deceased were identified as Kunal, Alok, Arpit, Ved and Yash, aged between six and 25 years.
Police said information about the incident was received through the Police Response Vehicle (PRV) at around 5.30 p.m. on Monday. Local police teams immediately reached the site, but a narrow lane leading to the house prevented a fire brigade vehicle from accessing the location.
A rescue operation was launched with the help of a JCB to clear the debris. Around 16 personnel from the police and fire departments, assisted by local residents, searched the rubble for survivors.
Seven people were eventually rescued and taken to the Medical College in Fatehpur, where doctors declared four of them dead. The fifth victim later succumbed to injuries.
Fatehpur Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik said preliminary questioning of people at the site indicated that the explosion may have been caused by a gas cylinder.
Four gas cylinders were recovered from the site, two of which were reportedly found to have exploded. However, officials said the exact cause of the blast has not yet been established.
Forensic and Fire Department teams are examining the site to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
The blast caused the upper two floors of the main house to collapse. Beams of some neighbouring houses were also damaged, though no casualties were reported there.
Police and administrative teams remain at the site as the investigation continues.
