Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday said his government was working to fulfil the vision of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh and build a Punjab based on patriotism, equality, justice and public welfare.
Addressing the state-level ‘Jashan-e-Inquilab’ programme at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana to mark Bhagat Singh’s birth anniversary, Mann highlighted initiatives taken by his government to commemorate the revolutionary, including naming the Mohali airport after him, installing a 30-feet-high bronze statue at Nishan-e-Inquilab Plaza and developing a ₹52-crore heritage complex at Khatkar Kalan.
Mann said the Khatkar Kalan project was being developed as a heritage, learning and cultural-tourism destination centred on Bhagat Singh’s life, ideals and sacrifice. The complex will include the ancestral house and replica house, a courtroom experience, heritage street, recreated village setting, library, curated displays, murals, sculptures and period exhibits.
According to the Chief Minister, the project will also feature an auditorium, audio-visual and interpretation systems, lighting installations, a Tourist Facilitation Centre, cottages, guest house, restaurant/cafeteria, parking and landscaped spaces. He said the project is in its finalisation stage, with finishing work, exhibits, landscaping, testing and commissioning underway, and will be dedicated to the public soon.
Mann said the government had also installed portraits of Bhagat Singh and Dr B.R. Ambedkar in Punjab government offices and reiterated that preserving the martyrs’ legacy was important for connecting younger generations with their ideals.
The Chief Minister also cited his government’s record on electricity, healthcare, employment, roads, education and irrigation. He said around 90 per cent of households were receiving zero electricity bills, more than 70,000 government jobs had been provided on merit and around 1,100 Aam Aadmi Clinics were functioning across the state.
He said the government was also renovating around 45,000 km of roads, had increased the area under canal irrigation from 26 per cent to 80 per cent and launched the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna, offering cashless treatment of up to ₹10 lakh per family.
Mann called upon people, particularly the youth, to draw inspiration from Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru and work towards building a progressive and prosperous Punjab and India.
The programme also featured Punjabi musical performances by Ranjit Bawa and Kulwinder Billa, traditional dhadi jatha performances and the play Gagan Damama Bajio, bringing the revolutionary legacy of Bhagat Singh and his comrades to the gathering.
