US President Donald Trump has confirmed that members of his team spoke with Iran on Monday but gave no indication that the contacts had produced progress towards an agreement to end the ongoing conflict.
Asked at the White House whether his team had spoken to Iran, Trump replied, “Yeah, they have.” When asked whether mediators were involved, he again responded affirmatively, without identifying those involved or providing details of the discussions.
Pressed on whether there had been any movement, Trump said, “No, we’re going to win. As far as I’m concerned, it’s going to be one way or the other. It’s going to go pretty quickly.”
The comments confirmed contact between the two sides but did not indicate that US and Iranian officials had held direct talks or reached a new understanding. Reuters reported that US and Iranian officials had separately engaged with mediators as part of renewed efforts to end the conflict.
Trump had earlier rejected an Iranian proposal that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and suspending hostilities within seven days, while Iran has said it is awaiting a US response. The diplomatic efforts have focused on the conflict and Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump made the remarks during a White House event concerning a proposed steel investment in Iowa. Asked about the impact of the conflict on drivers and truckers, he predicted that fuel prices would fall once the war ended, saying, “Gas is going to go way down.” He also linked the end of the conflict to a reduction in inflation, without giving a timetable or price estimate.
“Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Asked separately about five suspects reportedly arrested in Britain and released on bail, Trump said an Iranian connection “might be” possible but declined to elaborate.
