Indian shooter Neeru Dhanda created history on Tuesday by winning the women’s trap individual gold at the 2026 Asian Games with an Asian record score in the final at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.
Neeru, who topped the qualification round with 118 points, produced a score of 28 in the final to become the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games gold medal in the trap event.
Her victory also made her the first Indian shooter to win an Asian Games medal in the individual trap event.
The gold came on a day when Neeru had earlier won a silver medal in the women’s trap team event alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer. The Indian trio finished with a combined score of 328 after the 125-shot qualification round, securing second place ahead of Kuwait.
Neeru remained composed throughout the individual final. Her first miss came on her ninth shot, briefly dropping her to third place, but she responded strongly with perfect scores in the third and fourth series.
She moved into the lead with 19 hits from 20 shots and maintained her position despite another miss in the fifth series. Neeru then closed out the final with five consecutive successful hits to seal the gold.
China’s Yunong Sun won the silver medal with 26 points, while Kuwait took bronze with 21.
The victory gave India its second shooting gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Games and fifth gold overall at the continental showpiece.
Neeru had earlier made history this year by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual ISSF World Cup gold in women’s trap at the Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy. She also won a bronze medal in the trap mixed team event at the ISSF World Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
