A 42-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 65-year-old mother in Juhu Village in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, following a family dispute, police said.
The accused, identified as Mahesh Ratnakar Kadam, allegedly strangled his mother, Manda Ratnakar Kadam, with a piece of cloth and repeatedly smashed her head against the floor at their residence in Ashtavinayak Society, Sector 11, on August 9.
Senior Police Inspector Shashikant Chandekar said Kadam allegedly harboured resentment towards his mother because she did not allow his wife to live with the family. Police also said he believed that his mother gave greater attention and care to the family of his sister, Rupali Devlekar.
Following the incident, Kadam allegedly remained at the spot and began shouting. Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, reached the residence and informed the police.
A team from Vashi Police Station reached the scene and took the victim’s body into custody. A case was registered on the complaint of Mangesh Kashinath Devlekar, the victim’s son-in-law and a resident of Mankhurd.
“Based on the information received, we reached the spot and subsequently arrested the accused. A case has been registered against him under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” Chandekar said.
A court has remanded Kadam to police custody until August 13. Further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing is underway.
The incident comes days after a similar case was reported in south Delhi’s Maidangarhi, where a 60-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her son on July 29 after she refused to give him money to buy liquor.
The accused in that case, Amod Pandit, was arrested. Family members alleged that he repeatedly attacked his mother with a spade after initially assaulting her with his fists and feet.
The woman’s daughter-in-law, Ganita Devi, had said she learnt about the incident from a relative and rushed to the house.
