Five officials from the excise and police departments have been suspended and another transferred out of the district following multiple deaths allegedly linked to spurious liquor consumption in three villages of Banda tehsil in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district.
The deaths were reported late Saturday night and in the early hours of Sunday in Gogra Khurd, Nauroz and Patan villages. Several residents reportedly fell ill after consuming liquor, with symptoms including vomiting, severe headache and sudden deterioration in health.
Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, Excise Commissioner Deepak Saxena suspended Sagar Assistant Excise Commissioner Kirti Dubey, Assistant District Excise Officer Dilip Khandate and Banda Circle Excise Sub-Inspector Proshni Ureti.
Deputy Commissioner and Divisional Flying Squad in-charge Neerja Srivastava was removed from Sagar district and attached to the department’s headquarters in Gwalior.
The police department also suspended Banda police station in-charge Rajendra Singh Kushwaha and Gugra outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Puran Lal Ladia with immediate effect.
Probe Underway
Chief Minister Yadav said no official or individual found responsible would be spared and directed senior officers to ensure a prompt investigation, relief measures and proper medical treatment for those affected.
“This is a sensitive matter,” Yadav said, adding that he had ordered the Sagar district in-charge Minister and officials to investigate the incident and take strict action after learning about it during his stay in New Delhi.
Senior administrative and police officials, including the Sagar Divisional Commissioner, Inspector General, Collector and Superintendent of Police, reached the affected villages. They met bereaved families, reviewed patients undergoing treatment and directed medical teams to provide immediate care.
Authorities have launched door-to-door screening in the affected villages and seized liquor samples for forensic testing. Preliminary findings have indicated the possible presence of methyl alcohol, while investigators are also examining suspected supply links across the Uttar Pradesh border.
Local liquor outlets in the area have been sealed as a precautionary measure. Further action is expected after forensic findings and post-mortem reports establish the precise cause of the deaths.
