BJP leaders have stepped up their criticism of Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi following a controversy over comedian Pulkit Mani’s mimicry of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a student-focused event in Indore.

The controversy erupted after Mani performed an act imitating Prime Minister Modi’s mannerisms, including his laugh, hand gestures and style of greeting and embracing people, during the “Chhatron Ki Goonj” programme attended by Rahul Gandhi on September 19. The BJP has criticised the Congress leader over the performance and his presence on the stage.

Speaking to IANS, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said Gandhi should have considered whether the performance was appropriate.

“Rahul Gandhi should have thought about whether this was appropriate. Rahul Gandhi should have taken that decision, but unfortunately, he failed to do so,” Khandelwal said.

He further alleged that Gandhi had established himself alongside the comedian as someone who could “only entertain people but cannot wipe their tears.”

BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi also criticised Gandhi over the episode, questioning how long the Congress leader would continue with what he described as “comedy and parody.”

“Till how long will you keep on enjoying your comedy? When does the fun end? How long will you keep trying your luck through this kind of comedy and parody?” Naqvi asked.

He further alleged that such performances were damaging the Congress’ political standing and accused the party of repeatedly using mimicry artists to target Prime Minister Modi.

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma also criticised Gandhi, describing the approach as a “degraded level of politics.”

“I feel that using this kind of language in politics is either out of frustration or you could say they are trying to drag politics in a completely new direction,” Sharma said.

The episode has triggered a fresh political exchange between the BJP and Congress, with BJP leaders objecting to the mimicry while Congress has defended the event and its focus on student-related issues.
