A Delhi court on Saturday remanded social media influencer Amir Shokeen to five days of police custody in connection with a case involving a video allegedly depicting the racial harassment and humiliation of a person from Tripura.
Shokeen was produced before the Tis Hazari Court after his one-day judicial custody ended. The court granted the police request for further custody after hearing arguments from both sides.
Police told the court that they needed to recover a mobile phone allegedly connected to the case and travel to Ahmedabad as part of the investigation. The defence counsel argued that the precise location of the phone had not been established, stating only that it was believed to be somewhere in Ahmedabad.
Shokeen was arrested by Delhi Police from the Karol Bagh area on Thursday. According to the police, the controversial video was made around a month ago.
The case drew widespread attention after the video surfaced on social media and triggered criticism. Shokeen subsequently apologised and claimed in a Facebook post that the video was scripted and that he knew the man featured in it.
He said the man had previously worked at a friend’s cafe in Ahmedabad and described the exchange as a humorous interaction in which both participants were joking. Shokeen maintained that he had no intention of insulting anyone.
The police investigation is continuing, with the recovery of the mobile phone and the proposed visit to Ahmedabad among the stated requirements for further questioning.
Officials also said that previous cases had been registered against Shokeen under Sections 323, 324, 504 and 506 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
