Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan said representing the country at the Asian Games carries a distinct emotional significance, particularly with a medal at stake, as India prepared to face Pakistan in the men’s cricket gold medal match on Saturday.
Kishan made the remarks after his impressive 80 helped India post 169 before bowling Sri Lanka out for just 45 in the semi-final at Korogi Sports Park, securing a convincing victory and a place in the final.
“Playing for India, especially when it’s about the medal, makes a difference in your heart,” Kishan said during the post-match press conference, noting that the atmosphere, national flags and support from spectators added to the occasion. He acknowledged that the tournament brought a different kind of pressure, even with a strong Indian squad.
Reflecting on his innings, Kishan said India needed to reach a competitive total on a challenging pitch marked by visible cracks. With a strong spin attack at their disposal, the team had targeted a score of around 150 to put themselves in a safer position.
He explained that the team’s strategy was to ensure that at least one batter who had settled at the crease stayed until the end, allowing India to build a substantial total. Kishan said the unpredictable surface required batters to focus on the team’s needs rather than individual milestones.
Looking ahead to the final against Pakistan, Kishan said India would concentrate on staying calm, adapting to the conditions and taking the game one moment at a time.
Kishan also praised the hospitality of local organisers and volunteers in Japan, saying they had been helpful despite language barriers. He said the experience had been enjoyable and that he hoped to return to the country with his family.
He also thanked Indian supporters who had travelled to cheer for the team, saying their encouragement helped players feel comfortable and supported, regardless of the result.
