Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Indian MMA athlete Suchika Tariyal and the Indian women’s cricket team after their medal-winning performances at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Tariyal created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win an Asian Games medal in mixed martial arts. She secured bronze in the women’s traditional under-60 kg category.
In a post shared by the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi congratulated Tariyal on the landmark achievement and praised her dedication and determination, while wishing her further success.
Tariyal, a former national-level judoka, defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarterfinals to secure a medal before eventually finishing with bronze.
Modi also congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team after the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side won the gold medal at the continental multi-sport event.
Describing the triumph as a significant achievement for Indian cricket, the Prime Minister praised the team’s confidence, skill and teamwork. He said the victory would inspire young cricketers across the country.
The women’s cricket gold marked India’s first gold medal of the ongoing Asian Games and came after India defeated Sri Lanka in a repeat of the women’s cricket final from the previous edition.
The victory also enabled the Indian team to successfully defend its Asian Games women’s cricket title.
While the cricket team’s gold provided India with its first top-podium finish of the 2026 Games, Tariyal’s bronze represented a landmark achievement for the country in MMA at the continental event.
