Kannur, October 1, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The official vehicle of Kerala Sports Minister O.J. Janeesh was allegedly attacked by DYFI activists at multiple locations in Kannur district on Thursday, prompting police to strengthen his security.
The first incident occurred at Kuppam in Taliparamba while Janeesh was travelling to Kasaragod after attending an official Archaeology Department programme in Kannur. Protesters allegedly stopped his vehicle and pelted it with stones and struck it with their hands, damaging its flag pole and rain guard. Security personnel and police had to intervene to clear the road.
The minister’s vehicle faced further protests in Payyannur and at other locations along the route to Kasaragod. It was reportedly attacked again shortly after passing Payyannur, with the incidents continuing up to the district border.
Congress leaders described the repeated attacks as a serious security lapse, noting that the minister’s vehicle had been targeted twice within a short period. The incidents followed a warning by DYFI leader and MLA M. Vijin that the organisation would confront Janeesh over his remarks.
Janeesh, who is also the Youth Congress state president, had recently led a protest in Thiruvananthapuram against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the BJP. The march was followed by clashes between Youth Congress and SFI workers. Janeesh alleged that SFI activists provoked the confrontation by throwing beer bottles at the protesters.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala spoke to Janeesh and directed the Director General of Police to take strict action. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan also contacted the minister and warned of strong legal action if such violence continued.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Janeesh’s security has been increased, with additional personnel, pilot and escort vehicles planned for his public programmes and district-level travel. Surveillance has also been strengthened at his office and residence.
