A Special CBI Court in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has sentenced former Income Tax Officer Satish Kumar Bhadani to five years of rigorous imprisonment for demanding and accepting a Rs 40,000 bribe from a taxpayer in a case dating back nearly a decade.

The court, which pronounced the verdict on September 29, also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on Bhadani, who was serving as Income Tax Officer, Ward 2(2), at the Income Tax Office in Jalgaon when the offence took place.

According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the case was registered on September 23, 2016, following a written complaint by a taxpayer from Jalgaon district.

The complainant had alleged that his and his wife’s income tax returns had been selected for detailed scrutiny by the Income Tax Department. He further alleged that Bhadani demanded an undue advantage in return for not carrying out an intensive examination of the returns and issuing favourable assessment orders.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI conducted a verification and laid a trap. During the operation, Bhadani was caught allegedly accepting Rs 40,000 from the complainant, following which he was arrested and legal proceedings were initiated.

The CBI filed its chargesheet against Bhadani on December 28, 2016. Charges were subsequently framed by the court on December 20, 2021.

After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the Special CBI Court found Bhadani guilty of the corruption-related offences and awarded him five years of rigorous imprisonment along with the monetary penalty.

The CBI welcomed the conviction, which brings the case to a conclusion nearly 10 years after it was registered.

The case highlights the criminal consequences for public servants found guilty of misusing their official position for personal gain and follows a CBI investigation into a complaint of bribery involving scrutiny of income tax returns.
