The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday hit back at Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the conclusion of the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ in Jalandhar, asking him to address questions about drug trafficking routes outside Punjab and saying the anti-drug campaign should not single out the state.
The AAP pointed to the seizure of around 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine, valued at more than Rs 3,000 crore in the international market, in a joint operation involving the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Indian Coast Guard in the Arabian Sea west of Lakshadweep. Five Pakistani nationals were detained in connection with the seizure.
In a statement, the party said the seizure had highlighted the need for a coordinated national approach to tackling narcotics trafficking.
“Amit Shah came to Punjab today to give lectures on drugs. At the same time, 526 kg of heroin and methamphetamine worth over Rs 3,000 crore has been seized in an operation in which Gujarat ATS provided the intelligence,” the AAP said.
The party alleged that Gujarat had emerged as an important route in the country’s drug trafficking network and said Shah should begin his ‘Nasha Mukt Yatra’ from Gujarat rather than focusing his campaign on Punjab.
The BJP’s 13-day ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, launched on September 18, covered all 117 Assembly constituencies before concluding with Shah’s rally in Jalandhar on Wednesday.
The AAP further claimed that drug supply networks operating within Punjab were increasingly linked to interstate routes and alleged that pharmaceutical drugs entering the state originated from several other states.
“The old Pakistan route is no longer the excuse Amit Shah can keep using. Punjab Police has disrupted cross-border supply and is now dealing with an interstate drug network,” the party said.
It asked the BJP to address questions concerning drug seizures on maritime routes, the movement of pharmaceutical drugs into Punjab and alleged interstate supply networks.
“If Amit Shah wants a Nasha Mukt Bharat, he should answer: Why are massive consignments being intercepted on the western maritime route? Why are pharmaceutical drugs entering Punjab from outside states? What action is being taken against interstate suppliers?” the AAP said.
The party also raised questions about the central investigation into a drug case that it described as a Rs 6,000-crore case, and sought clarity on the action taken by central agencies.
“Punjab is not asking for lectures. Punjab is asking for a coordinated national fight against drugs,” the AAP said, urging the Centre to act against narcotics networks wherever they are detected.
At his Jalandhar rally, Shah made the drug issue a central part of the BJP’s political campaign in Punjab and said the party would work to eliminate the drug trade in the state if voted to power. He also set December 2029 as the deadline for making Punjab drug-free.
The AAP, however, accused the BJP of turning the drug issue into a political campaign against Punjab and said the problem should be addressed through coordinated action involving central agencies and governments across states.
