At least nine Afghan civilians, including women and children, were killed and 11 others injured after Pakistani military aircraft allegedly struck civilian homes in Afghanistan’s Kunar and Helmand provinces, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said on Thursday.
According to Mujahid, the strikes took place on Wednesday night in the Chugam area of Shultan district in Kunar and the Safar area of Garmser district in Helmand. Three residential buildings were also destroyed, he said.
“Last night, Pakistani aircraft bombed civilian homes in Chugam, Shultan District of Kunar, and Safar, Garmser District of Helmand. Nine Afghan civilians, including women and children, were killed, 11 were injured, and three homes were destroyed,” Mujahid said in a post on X, condemning the strikes as an act of aggression.
The latest reported strikes come amid heightened tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban authorities, with several provinces in Afghanistan reportedly coming under Pakistani airstrikes in recent days.
Mujahid said Pakistani strikes in Kandahar, Paktia and Khost on September 24 killed four civilians, while attacks three days earlier in Kunar and Paktika left three people dead.
Last week, Mujahid accused Pakistan of carrying out attacks against Afghanistan to divert attention from domestic political and economic challenges and evade obligations under the Mecca defence agreement.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey signed the agreement in Mecca on August 7, committing to strengthen collective deterrence against acts of aggression. The pact states that an armed attack against one signatory would be treated as an attack against all three.
Mujahid alleged that Pakistan’s recent actions were intended to create the impression that the country was engaged in a war in Afghanistan while diverting attention from its internal problems.
He also warned that Afghanistan would provide what he described as an “appropriate response” to the Pakistani military’s actions.
The claims regarding the latest casualties and damage were made by the Taliban authorities and could not be independently verified.
