Foreign envoys and diplomatic missions in India have praised Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary courage in helping avert a potential midair tragedy aboard a Flydubai flight, commending his actions despite being seriously injured during an alleged attack.
The incident took place aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 on Wednesday. According to reports, the co-pilot stabbed Captain Machchhar, causing the aircraft to plunge. Despite his injuries, the Indian pilot fought back and opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers to enter and help overpower the attacker.
After the assailant was subdued, the seriously wounded captain was stabilised until the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Argentina’s Ambassador to India, Mariano Caucino, lauded Machchhar’s courage and sense of duty in a post on X, describing him as a hero who acted to save innocent lives despite being exhausted and severely injured.
Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India Mahishini Colonne also praised the captain’s “extraordinary courage” and “presence of mind”. She said his determination, along with the intervention of passengers and crew, helped prevent what could have been a terrible tragedy. She also wished him a full and speedy recovery.
The Israeli Embassy in India expressed gratitude to Machchhar for helping save several lives, including those of Israeli passengers aboard the flight. It said his bravery reflected the bonds of solidarity and humanity between people across national borders.
Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, also described Machchhar as “a true hero” and said the people of Israel were praying for his recovery.
The international tributes have highlighted the captain’s actions and the role played by passengers and crew in responding to the emergency.
