The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Thursday questioned Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami’s demand for a CBI inquiry into a woman’s eight-month stay at an SGPC-run sarai in Sri Anandpur Sahib, urging the committee to provide all relevant records to the Punjab Police, which is investigating the matter.
Addressing a press conference, AAP Punjab media in-charge Baltej Pannu sought explanations regarding the circumstances of the woman’s stay, the arrangements made for her and an alleged transfer of Rs 1 lakh from an SGPC account to her bank account.
Pannu asked who had arranged and authorised the woman’s accommodation, why she stayed at the sarai for eight months and who approved the provision of a vehicle, a sewadar and other expenses. He said the SGPC should hand over its sarai registers, financial records, vehicle details, sewadar information and related documents to the police to help establish the facts.
“Why is the SGPC seeking a CBI probe when the records needed to establish the facts are within the organisation itself?” Pannu asked, adding that the committee should cooperate with the ongoing police investigation.
He also referred to the CBI’s earlier investigation into the 2015 sacrilege cases, stating that the agency had subsequently filed a closure report. Pannu questioned whether transferring the present case to another agency would help resolve the concerns surrounding it.
Pannu further questioned statements attributed to Akali Dal (Badal) leader Bunty Romana, who had reportedly said the woman approached Sukhbir Singh Badal and was advised to contact the police to register an FIR. Pannu asked why a CBI inquiry was now being sought if the woman had initially been directed to approach the police.
Referring to Dhami’s recent press conference, Pannu said several questions about the woman’s stay and the SGPC’s arrangements remained unanswered. He also raised concerns about alleged harassment of the woman on social media and called for action against those targeting her.
Pannu said the matter had raised concerns among members of the Sikh community, including intellectuals and young people, and called for transparency from the SGPC. He urged the committee to provide all relevant documents to the Punjab Police so that the investigation could determine whether any irregularities had occurred.
The allegations and questions raised by Pannu are part of AAP Punjab’s position on the matter. The investigation’s findings will be required to establish the facts surrounding the woman’s stay and the arrangements made by the SGPC.
