The Punjab Government has released nearly ₹218 crore in financial assistance for dependent and orphan children during the 2026-27 financial year, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said on Thursday.
She said around 2.45 lakh children across the state are receiving financial assistance and benefits under the government’s social security initiatives to help meet their essential needs, continue their education and build a secure future.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said the scheme covers children below the age of 21 whose parents have both passed away, are both missing, or are unable to care for them due to physical or mental disabilities.
The minister said the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to providing care, protection and equal opportunities to children in vulnerable circumstances. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government aims to ensure that difficult family circumstances do not prevent children from accessing support and pursuing their aspirations.
To ensure timely and uninterrupted assistance, the Punjab Government has made a budget provision of nearly ₹433 crore for child welfare assistance in 2026-27.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said child welfare remains a priority for the government, which is working to create an environment where children can enjoy a safe childhood, live with dignity and develop their potential.
She added that the government would continue its efforts to provide sensitive and sustained support to dependent and orphan children across Punjab, helping them access essential services and opportunities for a better future.
