ICC Chairman Jay Shah on Sunday congratulated India women’s cricket team vice-captain Smriti Mandhana after she became the leading run-scorer in T20I cricket across both the men’s and women’s game.
Mandhana achieved the milestone during India’s Asian Games semifinal against Bangladesh at Korogi Sports Park, scoring a brisk 37 off 19 balls. Her knock took her T20I tally to 4,788 runs from 171 innings, surpassing former New Zealand cricketer Suzie Bates.
“Many congratulations to @mandhana_smriti for going top of the Women’s T20I run charts (4,788 runs). By rewriting history, you are lifting women’s cricket to new heights and setting the standard for young dreamers everywhere. Here’s to many more milestones ahead!” Shah posted on X.
Mandhana entered the semifinal with 4,751 runs from 170 innings and needed eight runs to move past Bates. She reached the mark early in her innings, hitting two boundaries and collecting two singles within her first seven balls.
The latest achievement adds to a remarkable run of milestones for the Indian batter. During the Asia Cup, Mandhana became the leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket, surpassing former India captain Mithali Raj’s tally of 10,868 runs.
She also scored 124 against Hong Kong during the tournament, registering her 18th international century. The feat took her past former Australia captain Meg Lanning for the most international hundreds in women’s cricket, a record that was subsequently equalled by South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt.
Since making her international debut in 2013, Mandhana has established herself as one of the leading batters in women’s cricket, with her latest record adding to her list of achievements.
She is currently fifth in the ICC Women’s T20I batting rankings and occupies the top position in the ICC Women’s ODI batting charts.
