Fresh from winning silver in the women’s 10m air rifle team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Indian shooter Sonam Maskar dedicated the medal to her parents, crediting them for playing a crucial role in her journey.
Sonam, Elavenil Valarivan and Vidarsa Kochalumkal combined to secure the silver medal at the Aichi Pref. General Shooting Gallery, finishing with 1897 points.
Speaking after the event, Sonam said she was proud to represent India and dedicated the achievement to her parents.
“It feels great to represent India at this level. I feel proud of winning the silver. I would dedicate this medal to my mom and dad; without them, I would not have been here,” Sonam told IANS.
The two-time ISSF World Cup silver medallist also thanked the Sports Authority of India (SAI), Indian Railways and the Army for supporting her career.
“I got a lot of support from the government. SAI supported me well. I’ve got support from my own sponsors too. The Indian Railways and the Army also supported me in my journey,” she said.
Sonam said the Indian shooting contingent would celebrate the team’s success after the men’s event on Sunday.
“We will be celebrating with the team. Tomorrow, the men’s event is also there, so we will be celebrating together after that,” she said.
Sonam also competed in the women’s 10m air rifle individual event, where she reached the final and finished sixth.
Elavenil, meanwhile, followed the team silver with another silver in the individual event after finishing second in a closely contested final.
Japan’s Hinata Taichi produced a decisive finish to claim the gold with an Asian Games record score of 253.0, while Elavenil finished with 252.4 for silver. South Korea’s Ban Hyo-jin won the bronze with 230.4.
