Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke has criticised the police action against protesting students in Jharkhand, calling the use of force a “suppression of democratic rights”.
Dipke spoke to student leader Devendra Nath Mahato, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital after his health deteriorated during a nine-day indefinite hunger strike over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.
The students had marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday despite heightened security arrangements. Police used lathi-charge, tear gas and water cannons after the protesters moved closer to the Assembly. Several students and security personnel were reportedly injured.
Mahato, who has been on a hunger strike seeking greater transparency, accountability and fairness in the recruitment process, allegedly sustained serious injuries during the police action. He later complained of severe chest pain and was admitted to hospital for treatment.
Dipke, who is currently in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, extended support to Mahato during a video call.
In a post on X, Dipke said Mahato told him that he had been lathi-charged before being taken to hospital and had suffered injuries. He also said Mahato was experiencing chest pain.
“Be it Jantar Mantar or Jharkhand, such police brutality against students is cruel and inhuman,” Dipke said.
He described the police action as unacceptable and said Mahato was “risking his life for the students”.
“From Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to the streets of Jharkhand, this inhuman and brutal police action against peacefully protesting students is completely unacceptable. Devendra Bhai is risking his life for the students. CJP stands firmly with him in his just struggle. We salute his courage, determination, and struggle,” he said.
Dipke demanded an immediate and impartial investigation into the police action and sought accountability against officers who allegedly ordered the lathi-charge on protesting students, particularly those observing the hunger strike.
He maintained that the voices of young people and students should not be suppressed through government pressure or the use of force, while reiterating his support for the ongoing peaceful student movement.
