The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won three of the four central posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections on Saturday, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen secured the vice-president’s post, leaving the Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) without a seat on the central panel.
ABVP’s Yash Dabas won the president’s post, Riya Chhawadi secured the secretary’s position and Lakshya Raj Singh was elected joint secretary. Shokeen won the vice-president’s post as an independent candidate.
The results drew a strong political response from BJP leaders, who attributed the outcome to support among students for the party’s stated themes of nationalism, development and “Nation First” politics.
BJP National President Nitin Nabin congratulated ABVP and said the result reflected what he described as the youth’s continued faith in “positive and constructive student politics” and the vision of a “Viksit Bharat”.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also congratulated ABVP, describing the victory as a sign of youth support for the “Nation First” policy. He expressed confidence that the organisation would continue working on student interests, national service and nation-building.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said Delhi University attracts students from across the country and described DUSU as a voice of students nationally. Reacting to the result, he contrasted the Opposition’s campaign messaging with what he called “Jhooth Ki Goonj”.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also used the phrase “Jhooth Ki Goonj” while reacting to the results on X and said the outcome represented support for patriotism, development and the vision of a “Viksit Bharat 2047”.
Another BJP leader said ABVP had also performed strongly in North Campus colleges, including SRCC, Hindu College, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College, Ramjas College and the Faculty of Law.
In the presidential contest, Dabas polled 24,576 votes and defeated NSUI’s Vijay Shankar Meena, who secured 22,523 votes, by 2,053 votes.
Shokeen emerged as the winner in the vice-presidential contest with 30,615 votes. ABVP’s Riya Chhawadi won the secretary’s post with 21,650 votes, while Lakshya Raj Singh secured the joint secretary’s position with 16,615 votes.
Polling was held on Friday across 52 centres and recorded a voter turnout of 40.46 per cent, the highest in three years. The previous year’s turnout was 39.5 per cent.
