Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India is the only G20 nation to have fulfilled all the commitments it made at the Paris COP21 Summit ahead of schedule, citing the country’s progress in renewable energy, clean mobility and other areas of environmental protection.
Addressing the international conference on ‘The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics’ after inaugurating the event, Modi highlighted India’s efforts to tackle climate change while integrating traditional environmental values with modern development.
“India is the only country in the G20… that has fulfilled all the commitments made at the Paris COP21 Summit ahead of schedule,” he said, adding that India’s performance in areas including non-fossil fuel capacity, solar energy and carbon emissions is being positively discussed globally.
The Prime Minister highlighted international initiatives associated with India’s climate action efforts, including ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’, the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), the Global Biofuels Alliance, the International Big Cat Alliance and Mission LiFE.
He said India’s solar power capacity had risen from around 2 GW nearly 12 years ago to more than 160 GW now.
Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar systems have been installed in more than 50 lakh households, with government financial assistance of up to around Rs 80,000 per household, he said. Under PM-KUSUM, solar pumps have also been installed for 30 lakh farmers.
Modi said India had avoided nearly 20 crore tonnes of carbon emissions through solar energy alone. He also cited a three-fold rise in wind energy capacity over the past 12 years, growth in hydropower and efforts to expand nuclear energy generation.
On clean mobility, the Prime Minister said India was progressing in areas such as green hydrogen and electric vehicles. Referring to the recently flagged-off hydrogen train, he described it as the world’s longest hydrogen train and a step towards a new era in clean mobility.
He said EV sales had risen nearly 950 times over the past 12 years, from fewer than 3,000 vehicles sold in the year before 2014 to nearly 25 lakh in the previous year.
Modi also pointed to FASTag as an example of technology reducing waiting time at toll plazas and fuel wastage, while highlighting the expansion of the Metro rail network from around 250 km in five cities before 2014 to more than 1,000 km across over 20 cities today.
On agriculture, he said 24,000 clusters covering nearly 12.5 lakh hectares had been formed under the National Mission on Natural Farming. Nearly 3,000 climate-resilient crop varieties have also been developed, he said.
The Prime Minister further highlighted the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, under which crores of trees have been planted across the country.
