Veteran Punjab leader and former Cabinet Minister Bhagat Chuni Lal, who passed away at the age of 93, is being remembered as a humble and accessible public figure whose decades-long political career was marked by grassroots connect, public service and commitment to social welfare.
A prominent leader from the Dalit community in the Doaba region, Bhagat Chuni Lal held several important portfolios in the Punjab government, including Local Bodies, Medical Education, and Forest & Wild Life Preservation.
During his long public life, he consistently emphasised integrity and accountability in public service. He maintained that political office and power were temporary responsibilities entrusted by the people, while a leader’s work, character and conduct remained their lasting legacy.
Bhagat Chuni Lal represented Jalandhar West as a multi-term Member of the Legislative Assembly and was known for keeping his home and office accessible to ordinary citizens. Listening to people’s concerns remained central to his approach to public life.
During his tenure in the Local Bodies and Medical Education departments, he advocated stronger municipal services, improved sanitation and expansion of medical infrastructure in underserved areas. He also stressed that government policies should translate into tangible benefits for weaker sections of society.
Beyond his administrative responsibilities, Bhagat Chuni Lal was regarded as a unifying figure within his community and political circles. His calm demeanour and measured approach earned him respect across political lines, including among those who differed from him politically.
His passing has drawn condolences from leaders and people across the political spectrum, who have remembered his contribution to Punjab’s public life and his longstanding association with Jalandhar and the Doaba region.
His legacy of public service is also being carried forward by his son, Mohinder Bhagat, who is serving as a Cabinet Minister in the Punjab government.
A Shardhanjali Sabha to pay tribute to Bhagat Chuni Lal will be held on Sunday, September 20, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at MS Farm, Basti Peer Dad, Jalandhar.
The memorial gathering will provide an opportunity for family members, political leaders, supporters and members of the public to collectively pay their respects to the veteran leader.
