Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has rejected predictions that artificial intelligence could trigger an extinction-level catastrophe by 2030, saying he sees a “zero per cent” chance of the world ending because of AI by then.
In an interview with CBS News, Huang described the prospect of an AI-triggered end-of-the-world scenario as senseless and questioned whether some of the warnings about the technology were influenced by political, commercial or attention-seeking considerations.
At the same time, Huang called on companies to accelerate AI development while maintaining responsibility for the safety of the products they release. He said businesses should not launch AI systems before they are ready or sufficiently safe.
His position contrasts with calls from several technology leaders for a more deliberate approach to the development of increasingly capable AI systems. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others have advocated stronger safeguards around frontier AI development.
Huang said the industry should pursue AI in a manner that supports US prosperity without compromising product safety.
He expressed similar views earlier this week at Salesforce’s Dreamforce conference, where he opposed AI-specific legislation and argued that safety should primarily be treated as an engineering responsibility for individual companies.
While Huang was speaking at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, US President Donald Trump made a surprise call to the event. Trump told the audience that “the robots will not be taking over” and dismissed the broader debate as a “hoax”.
The Trump administration has directed federal agencies to remove barriers to US leadership in AI, while its AI Action Plan calls for faster innovation and fewer regulatory constraints.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also said earlier this week that frontier AI development must be guided by the principle that the technology should benefit humanity while remaining under human control. He joined other technology leaders in advocating a “deliberate” pace for AI development.
Amodei, meanwhile, warned earlier this month that advances in AI could outpace efforts to understand and control the technology, underscoring the continuing debate within the industry over the balance between rapid innovation and safety.
