NCPI MP Saayoni Ghosh on Saturday reacted to the arrest of Congress-nominated Nandigram Assembly bypoll candidate Milan Pradhan, saying she was aware that some cases were pending against him while expressing hope that the Congress and Trinamool Congress would eventually forge an alliance.
Ghosh said the political parties involved were free to take decisions regarding the election and that anyone aggrieved by the developments could approach the Election Commission or the courts.
“As far as I knew until yesterday about the leader who became their candidate from the Congress, there were some pending cases. Now look, this is politics, and in politics, what decisions can be taken before the election and what can be done, is between the two parties,” she said.
Ghosh also expressed hope that the Congress would ally with the Trinamool Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi.
“I hope that under Rahul ji’s leadership, Congress allies with TMC. If this happens, it will send a big message that this alliance is a genuine alliance in the true sense, and not just for the sake of saying it,” she said.
Her remarks came a day after Pradhan was arrested in connection with an old murder case in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district. The arrest followed former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement that her Trinamool faction would support Pradhan after its candidate withdrew from the Nandigram contest. Police sources said an arrest warrant had been issued against Pradhan.
The arrest has triggered a political dispute over its timing. Banerjee questioned the action and alleged that it reflected the BJP’s “politics of vendetta”. The BJP has rejected such allegations, saying the police action was carried out according to law.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh, while commenting on the Congress and Trinamool Congress, said political parties are formed to grow and that losing elections does not mean a party ceases to exist.
He said individuals may move from one political party to another, but the organisations themselves continue to exist, adding that such developments have occurred with the Congress and parties that emerged from its political tradition.
The developments have added to the political focus surrounding the Nandigram bypoll, scheduled for October 6.
