Following its victory in three of the four posts in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has said that increasing hostel capacity and conducting safety audits of paying guest (PG) accommodations and university hostels will be among the priorities of the new team.
The focus on accommodation safety comes after a multi-storey building collapsed in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan earlier this month, killing seven people, including five Delhi University students.
Yash Dabas, who was elected DUSU president, said expanding hostel accommodation had been a longstanding demand of the organisation.
He said Delhi University’s hostel capacity stood at around 5,700 beds in 2015 and had since more than doubled to over 12,000 following what he described as continuous efforts by ABVP.
“But we will continue to fight for this; we will keep fighting until the capacity reaches 1,00,000 students,” Dabas told IANS.
He said the new DUSU team’s immediate priority would be to conduct safety audits of every PG and hostel to prevent incidents similar to the Satya Niketan building collapse.
Riya Chhawdi, who won the DUSU secretary’s post, thanked the organisation, students, her team and family for their support. She also claimed that the election result showed support for ABVP among Gen Z.
Lakshay Raj Singh Rathore, who won the joint secretary’s post, said he was grateful to ABVP for giving him an opportunity to contest from Rajasthan after 12 years. He attributed his victory to the support of fellow students and others from the state.
Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, who won the vice-president’s post, said he would work to honour the trust placed in him by Delhi University students.
The election results were also welcomed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which said the outcome reflected youth support for its political position.
