Indore, September 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Indore for the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme has drawn attention to more than just the political event, with his social media post about the city’s popular poha-jalebi becoming a talking point ahead of his arrival.

Rahul Gandhi left Delhi on Saturday morning to address a large gathering of students, predominantly college-goers, as part of the ongoing ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ series. His programme is scheduled to begin at around 7 p.m., while he is expected to reach Indore by 1.30 p.m.

According to official information, around two lakh people have registered for the programme. Congress workers have completed organisational and security arrangements for the event.

A day before his visit, Rahul Gandhi posted on Instagram: “What is Indore serving up—‘poha-jalebi’ or something else?” The light-hearted reference to Indore’s food culture quickly drew attention on social media.

Poha, traditionally served with jalebi in Indore, is among the city’s best-known culinary specialities. The city is also known for food destinations such as Sarafa Chaupati and 56 Dukan.

Rahul Gandhi’s reference to poha-jalebi comes as the Congress seeks to engage young people through the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, or ‘Students’ Resonance’, platform. The programme is focused on issues concerning students and youth.

There is speculation that Rahul Gandhi could visit the popular 56 Dukan food street during his stay in the city. He had visited the area during an election rally in Indore five years ago. However, no additional official engagements have been announced so far, and Congress leaders have not ruled out the possibility of a brief visit to other locations after his arrival.

Indore’s food culture has received attention from political leaders over the years. During the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammelan held in the city four years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had referred to Sarafa Chaupati while speaking about Indore.

The city’s poha has also enjoyed recognition for generations, with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru having praised the local preparation during a visit to Indore.

The distinctive preparation of Indore’s poha is known for producing a light and fluffy texture, with the flattened rice grains remaining separate.

While Rahul Gandhi’s visit is primarily centred on his interaction with students at ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, his poha-jalebi post has added a distinctly local touch to the build-up to the event.
