A 49-year-old Kolkata Police commando was found dead inside a toilet at the Police Training School (PTS) on Saturday, with police suspecting suicide.
The deceased was identified as Deepak Tamang, who had been serving as a commando in the Kolkata Police for several years. His body was recovered from a toilet on the fourth floor of the commando barracks and sent to SSKM Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
According to police, the PTS received information at around 9:50 a.m. that a person had allegedly died by hanging. Police personnel rushed to the spot and found the toilet locked from inside. They broke open the door and found Tamang hanging from a towel tied to a toilet pipeline.
His colleagues brought him down and immediately took him to SSKM Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death.
Police said investigators found a mark around his neck and other circumstances that led them to suspect suicide. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Tamang was reportedly a resident of Kalimpong in north Bengal. His family has been informed about the death.
No FIR had been registered at the time of reporting, while police had initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
A senior Kolkata Police officer said, “The family of the commando has been informed. The matter is under investigation.”
Tamang’s colleagues expressed shock over his sudden death and described him as a well-regarded member of the force.
