Political tensions intensified in Indore ahead of Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme on Saturday, after posters and hoardings carrying the slogan ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’ appeared at several locations across the city.
The posters, which questioned claims attributed to Gandhi in his earlier programmes, surfaced overnight at various roads and intersections, including areas around Kila Maidan and Mahesh Garden. A social media presence under the name ‘Jhooth Ki Goonj’ also emerged in connection with the campaign. Reports said some posters carried QR codes directing people to material questioning earlier claims made by Gandhi.
The identity of those behind the campaign was not immediately clear. Congress workers removed posters from several locations after they were spotted. The material could not be independently verified in its entirety.
Indore City Congress president Chintu Choukse alleged that the poster campaign was another attempt by opponents to create hurdles for Gandhi’s programme. He maintained that political parties have the right to address the public in a democracy.
The controversy comes amid a series of disputes over arrangements for the event. The Congress had initially sought to hold the programme at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium but later shifted the venue to an Indore Development Authority (IDA) plot opposite Regional Park after permission for the stadium was not granted.
The IDA allotted around 12,000 square metres of land for three days for a fee of Rs 10.08 lakh. The authority later sought an additional Rs 4.03 lakh after finding that around 4,800 square metres of the site had been used before the permitted period. The Congress subsequently deposited the additional amount.
The police also imposed 31 conditions covering crowd strength, participant details, vehicles, parking, volunteers, entry and exit points and emergency arrangements. One of the conditions referred to the Justice J.S. Verma Commission report prepared following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, prompting objections from the Congress. Police said the reference was intended to underline security responsibilities for the event.
Despite the disputes, the Congress said the programme would proceed as scheduled on Saturday evening at the Regional Park venue. The event is focused on students and youth issues, particularly education, employment and recruitment-related concerns.
