Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday remembered legendary singer and music icon Zubeen Garg on his first death anniversary, sharing two photographs with the artiste on social media along with a brief message: “Miss you Zubeen.”
Sarma shared the photographs on his personal X account as Assam marked one year since the death of Garg, whose demise in September 2025 left thousands of fans and admirers mourning the loss of one of the state’s most celebrated cultural figures.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore, a day before he was scheduled to perform at an event organised under the North East International Festival (NEIF).
Across Assam, commemorative programmes are being held to mark the singer’s first death anniversary. The three-day Zubeen Divas began at Zubeen Kshetra in Sonapur, where Garg’s final resting place is located.
The memorial site has been decorated with flowers and fresh gamosas, with large numbers of admirers expected to visit to pay their respects and take part in the programmes.
The observance began with a prayer, followed by a naam-prasanga. Cultural programmes have also been planned, while the concluding day will feature Bhagawat recitation and Bhaona, reflecting Assam’s cultural and spiritual traditions.
The Assam government has extended support for arrangements at the memorial site to facilitate visitors and manage the expected crowds. Organisers have appealed to fans, devotees and visitors to maintain discipline and participate peacefully throughout the observance.
Popularly known among his admirers as “Pranor Silpi” (artist of the heart), Zubeen Garg occupied a distinctive place in Assam’s contemporary music scene. His contributions to music and cinema earned him a deep connection with audiences in Assam and beyond.
The first death anniversary observance at Zubeen Kshetra has become a significant occasion for his followers to remember his artistic contribution and the lasting influence he had on Assam’s cultural landscape.
