US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as a permanent security arrangement with Denmark and Greenland that would expand the American military presence on the strategically important Arctic island and restrict access by US adversaries.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the arrangement would have no expiry and would address US security concerns involving Greenland. A US State Department official said the provisions would remain in force even if Greenland eventually became fully independent.
“There will be NO COST to the United States!” Trump wrote, saying US representatives had worked with Denmark and Greenland at his direction to reach the arrangement.
The text of the agreement was not included in the announcement, and the supplied details did not contain statements from the Danish or Greenlandic governments. No details were provided on how any planned expansion of the US military presence would be financed.
Trump said the arrangement would give Washington authority over potential military activity and sensitive investments by adversarial countries.
“Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval,” he said.
He also announced plans to begin expanding the US military presence in Greenland but did not specify locations, troop numbers or a construction timetable.
“We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many,” Trump said. He added that the US would work with Greenland’s people on development and construction.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the arrangement as a permanent guarantee of American security interests in the Arctic.
“Greenland will forever be part of the strategic defense area of North America and exclude any adversary from it and the surrounding area,” Rubio said, adding that the agreement “permanently and completely addresses” US national security concerns in Greenland.
A State Department official, speaking on background, said the arrangement included permanent US access, basing and overflight rights. According to the official, it would allow the US military to increase the number of bases in Greenland when required.
The official described the military provisions as an explicit ban on bases and troop deployments by countries outside NATO, saying China and Russia would be barred from establishing bases or deploying troops on the island.
On investment, the official said the arrangement would restrict adversaries from entering sensitive sectors in ways that could pose risks to US security. According to the official, only the US and its allies would be allowed to make sensitive investments.
The official said the arrangement was reached during the week and would remain applicable if Greenland became independent. Trump described it as indefinite and said it would benefit Denmark, Greenland and US allies.
The US military relationship with Greenland dates back decades. Washington and Copenhagen signed a defence agreement in 1951, while an agreement signed at Igaliku in 2004 amended and supplemented that framework.
Greenland is also home to the US military’s Pituffik Space Base. Its radar operations support missile warning, missile defence and space surveillance, giving the Arctic territory an established role in monitoring potential threats to North America.
