Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has condemned an alleged incident in Thailand involving the assault of an elderly Sikh man and the removal of his turban, as well as a separate incident in which Sikh children were allegedly stopped from entering Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium for wearing kara.
Reacting to a video circulating on social media that purportedly shows the incident in Thailand, Dhami described it as deeply unfortunate and concerning. He said deliberately removing or disrespecting a Sikh’s turban, along with the alleged assault, could hurt Sikh sentiments.
Dhami said the turban is an important symbol of Sikh identity and dignity and urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to take up the matter diplomatically with the Thai government.
He also appealed to the concerned authorities in Thailand to conduct an impartial investigation and take action against those responsible in accordance with the law.
Dhami urged the Ministry of External Affairs to obtain details of the incident through the Indian Embassy in Thailand and provide the affected person with necessary legal and consular assistance.
He said governments concerned have a responsibility to ensure the safety, religious identity and dignity of Sikhs living or travelling abroad.
Dhami Condemns Delhi Stadium Incident
Dhami also strongly condemned the reported incident at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium in which Sikh children who had gone to watch a cricket match were allegedly stopped from entering because they were wearing kara.
He said kara is one of the Sikh articles of faith and an integral part of Sikh religious identity. According to Dhami, stopping Sikh children from entering a public place or sporting venue merely because they were wearing kara was unacceptable.
He said security arrangements should not result in conduct that hurts the religious sentiments of any community.
Dhami further said the Indian Constitution guarantees citizens freedom to practise their religion and maintain their religious identity. He said such an incident in the national capital was particularly concerning and called on the authorities to take immediate notice and investigate the matter.
He also sought accountability for the treatment allegedly meted out to the Sikh children and action against any staff members found responsible.
Recent matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium have been subject to security and entry arrangements, including designated entry points and security checks, according to Delhi Police advisories.
