Dhaka, November 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
India head coach Naushad Moosa has welcomed his young side’s winning start to the SAFF Championship 2026 but said the team must improve its concentration and game management after allowing Pakistan to score twice in stoppage time in their opening Group B match.
India secured a 3-2 victory at Dhaka’s National Stadium on Thursday after building a three-goal advantage. Suhail Ahmad Bhat scored twice in the first half, while Manglenthang Kipgen added the third in the 31st minute.
Pakistan’s late goals reduced the margin and put pressure on India in the closing moments, turning what had appeared to be a comfortable win into a tense finish.
Moosa praised the players’ attacking intent, commitment and character, describing the result as an encouraging beginning to the tournament. However, he said the late defensive lapse needed to be examined.
The coach said India had played good football, particularly in the first half, remained organised and created opportunities. He stressed that maintaining discipline and focus until the final whistle was essential at this level.
Moosa said the team would use the five-day break before its next fixture to recover, sharpen tactical organisation and integrate additional players expected to join the squad.
He identified transitions, defensive coordination and decision-making in crucial moments as key areas for improvement, adding that the team also needed to build greater chemistry within the group.
India have three points in Group B and will face the Maldives on November 11 in their final group-stage match, with a place at the top of the group in sight.
The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, scheduled for November 14. The championship final is set for November 17.
