Gurnoor Brar claimed four wickets as India’s disciplined bowling attack bundled out New Zealand for just 134 in 41 overs in the second ODI at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, putting the visitors in a commanding position.
Brar finished with figures of 4-30 from his 10 overs, while Anshul Kamboj, Axar Patel and Auqib Nabi took two wickets each as New Zealand struggled on a two-paced surface after India elected to bowl.
Nabi made an early impact, dismissing Tim Seifert for a duck in the second over before removing Will Young for six. Kamboj then sent Henry Nicholls back for 11, leaving New Zealand reeling at 23/3 inside nine overs. The hosts managed only 29 runs in the first 10 overs.
Brar tightened India’s grip with two wickets in the 20th over, dismissing Tom Latham for seven and Glenn Phillips for a duck. Both batters fell attempting pulls against his short deliveries.
New Zealand slipped to 53/5 before Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner mounted a recovery. Mitchell scored a fighting 55 off 104 balls, including five fours and two sixes, while Santner contributed 31 from 38 deliveries. Their 59-run partnership for the sixth wicket briefly steadied the innings.
Axar broke the stand in the 35th over by dismissing Mitchell, with Kamboj taking the catch. Brar then removed Santner, caught behind by KL Rahul, before Axar bowled Kyle Jamieson for seven.
Brar claimed his fourth wicket by dismissing Nathan Smith in the 40th over, and Kamboj wrapped up the innings by bowling Blair Tickner for two in the following over.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 134 all out in 41 overs (Daryl Mitchell 55, Mitchell Santner 31; Gurnoor Brar 4-30, Anshul Kamboj 2-25, Axar Patel 2-28, Auqib Nabi 2-31).
