The death toll in the building collapse at Delhi’s Chawri Bazaar rose to three on Saturday after rescue teams recovered another body from beneath the debris, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Pankaj Sharma, 40, a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Bihar’s Khagaria district.
With the latest recovery, five people have been brought out from the debris, including three deceased persons and two injured survivors. Both injured persons have received medical treatment and are reported to be stable, officials said.
Rescue operations remain underway at the site.
The three-storey building, which was under construction, collapsed on Thursday in Gali Sitara, near Chawri Bazaar Metro Station. Authorities received information about the incident at around 9.50 a.m., following which a large-scale rescue operation was launched.
Teams from the Delhi Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were deployed.
Two bodies were recovered on Thursday, while an injured person was rescued and taken to hospital.
Police have said that the construction work being carried out at the building was illegal and that the structure had been declared unsafe.
In the aftermath of the incident, the MCD suspended its Junior Engineer and Assistant Engineer. An FIR has also been registered against the contractor.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has assured that all possible efforts are being made to rescue anyone who may still be trapped. She said an investigation was underway and those found responsible would face strict action.
