A major tragedy was averted on Friday after four coaches of the Karmabhoomi Express, travelling from Amritsar to New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, caught fire near Sarai Banjara in Patiala district. All passengers escaped unhurt, railway officials said.
Ambala Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vinod Kumar Bhatia said the incident occurred between Rajpura and Sadhu Garh railway stations. The loco pilot and guard noticed automatic chain pulling (ACP) and a drop in pressure, following which they brought the train under control.
After getting down, they noticed fire and smoke and immediately took precautionary measures. All passengers were evacuated, while the affected coaches were isolated to prevent the fire from spreading further.
Bhatia said the fire initially broke out in one coach but spread to three others due to strong winds. A total of four coaches were affected. Railway authorities also regulated train movement on the other line after receiving information from the guard.
There were no injuries or casualties in the incident.
A similar incident was reported in Bihar in August, when a fire broke out on the Samastipur-Saharsa Passenger train at Simri Bakhtiyarpur railway station in Saharsa district. The blaze reportedly started near the train’s middle engine and spread to three coaches, triggering panic among passengers.
Passengers evacuated the coaches as flames and thick smoke spread. Fire tenders and railway officials reached the station and brought the fire under control. All passengers reportedly escaped safely.
