A 47-year-old married man from Uttar Pradesh died by suicide after setting himself on fire inside a utensil factory in northwest Delhi’s Wazirpur Industrial Area, police said. He allegedly took the extreme step after a 20-year-old woman, the daughter of his friend, turned down his marriage proposal.
The deceased, identified as Sandeep, was a resident of Sant Kabir Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, where he lived with his wife and two children.
According to police, Sandeep frequently visited his friend’s house and developed feelings for the latter’s daughter. The woman, who works at a utensil factory in Wazirpur, lives alone in Delhi.
Police said Sandeep regularly contacted her over the phone, but she had stopped communicating with him some time ago. He travelled to Delhi on Thursday, reportedly disturbed by the breakdown in their communication.
On Friday, he reached the factory carrying two bottles of petrol and asked the woman to marry him. After she refused, he allegedly poured petrol over himself and set himself on fire.
Factory workers rushed to help after hearing his cries and managed to extinguish the flames. He was taken to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
During the investigation, police recovered a suicide note in which Sandeep reportedly blamed the woman for the breakdown of their alleged friendship and linked it to his decision to die by suicide. The woman, however, has denied being in a relationship with him, police said.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the deceased’s family has been informed. Further investigation is underway.
