Tributes poured in from across the cricket fraternity after India fast bowler Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket, with former teammates, fellow cricketers, commentators and IPL franchises celebrating his contribution to the longest format.
Shami brings the curtain down on his Test career with 229 wickets from 64 matches and 122 innings. Renowned for his pace, seam movement and ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs, he was a key member of India’s red-ball bowling attack for several years.
Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary, who led Shami at the domestic level, described the pacer as a warrior and recalled having him in his bowling line-up.
“The red ball may no longer be in his hands, but the memories of his thunderbolts will forever remain in the hearts of cricket lovers. Some legends don’t say goodbye; they simply become history,” Tiwary wrote on X, reflecting on his experience of captaining Shami.
Former India fast bowler Munaf Patel said Shami would be missed in Test cricket but expressed hope of seeing him continue in the country’s white-ball teams.
“You will be missed in whites, buddy. Congratulations on your amazing career. See you soon in blues,” he wrote.
Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan and batter Ajinkya Rahane also congratulated Shami. “Congrats brother for a great career,” Dhawan said, while Rahane described it as a fantastic career.
Irfan Pathan highlighted Shami’s ability to generate late movement with the red ball, saying his skill with the seam would be missed.
His former IPL franchises also joined the tributes. Punjab Kings recalled his trademark seam position and ability to work magic with the red ball, while Lucknow Super Giants wrote that the red cherry would miss its favourite bowler. LSG pacer Mohsin Khan also wished him well.
Commentator Harsha Bhogle offered an extensive tribute, praising Shami’s mastery of seam and swing bowling and his ability to create breakthroughs when matches appeared to be drifting.
Chennai Super Kings, meanwhile, summed up his Test contribution through his career figures, thanking him for the memories and impact in India’s whites.
