Indian diplomat Shivani Gupta, a qualified chartered accountant, has been elected to a key United Nations panel responsible for advising the General Assembly on budgetary and administrative matters.
The General Assembly’s Fifth Committee nominated Gupta unopposed on Friday for one of the Asia-Pacific region’s seats on the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ). She will serve a three-year term from 2027 to 2029.
The committee conducted the election virtually. The General Assembly routinely approves appointments to the 21-member advisory body, whose members serve in their individual capacities.
Announcing her election, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN said Gupta would represent the country on the panel for the 2027–2029 term.
The ACABQ provides independent expert scrutiny of UN budgets, administrative proposals and resource requirements. Its recommendations help the General Assembly assess how contributions from member states are allocated and used.
Gupta recently joined India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations as a First Secretary. Before that, she served as an Under Secretary handling East Asia at the Ministry of External Affairs.
Her previous diplomatic assignments included postings at the Indian Embassy in Beijing and India’s diplomatic representation in Taiwan.
Gupta qualified as a chartered accountant before joining the Indian Foreign Service in 2018. Her professional background combines financial expertise with diplomatic experience, a combination considered relevant to the advisory panel’s work.
According to her biography circulated to the General Assembly, her accountancy training has given her expertise in financial reporting, auditing, governance, budgeting, risk management and institutional oversight.
Her appointment places an Indian representative on a panel that plays an important role in examining the financial and administrative requirements of the United Nations system.
