Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his impressive run with the bat, scoring his second consecutive century to put India A in a strong position against New Zealand A on the opening day of the third unofficial Test on Saturday.
The left-handed opener struck 102 off 127 balls, while Sai Sudharsan remained unbeaten on 77 as India A reached 227/2 before persistent rain forced an early end to play.
Jaiswal, who had scored an unbeaten 155 in the previous unofficial Test in Christchurch, shared a commanding 175-run opening partnership with Sudharsan after India A were asked to bat.
The pair negotiated the early movement offered by the surface before gradually taking charge. Jaiswal shifted gears after settling in, striking three boundaries in an over from Jarrod McKay. He survived a reprieve on 54 when Matthew Boyle dropped a catch at slip, making New Zealand A pay by accelerating with a series of boundaries.
Jaiswal reached his half-century and went on to complete his century from 127 deliveries with consecutive boundaries. His innings ended soon afterwards when he chipped a delivery towards mid-off. He had also received attention from the physio during his stay after experiencing cramps.
Sudharsan provided stability at the other end, reaching his half-century off 129 balls and continuing to bat patiently after the opening stand was broken.
Devdutt Padikkal, however, could manage only 15 before edging a delivery from McKay to the wicketkeeper. India A captain Dhruv Jurel was unbeaten on four when rain halted proceedings.
Danru Ferns was New Zealand A’s most economical bowler, returning figures of 1/16 from 10 overs, while McKay claimed 1/45.
India A’s line-up also includes Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Prasidh Krishna as the team prepares for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on November 19.
The visitors will resume at 227/2, with Sudharsan and Jurel at the crease.
Brief Scores: India A 227/2 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 102, Sai Sudharsan 77 not out; Danru Ferns 1/16, Jarrod McKay 1/45) against New Zealand A.
